Meet Necrocia the Zombie Mermaid. This adorable undead amigurumi crochet pattern is the perfect Halloween crochet project! She works up fast and is just the right size for hug.

Necrocia had a fun-loving life and she plans on having a fun-loving afterlife. Missing an arm won’t hold her back, and her exposed brains? Consider them a hair accessory. She is spunky and ready to party.

Zombie Mermaid Amigurumi free Crochet Pattern from Hooked by Kati

And what zombie would be complete without Glow-in-the-dark eyes? A little bloodshot (hey, give a girl a break!), her eyes glow green in the dark thanks to glow paint. You can get clear safety eyes and paint them with just about anything. In this case, I used glow in the dark paint and it worked GREAT!

Construction

Necrocia is a top-down mermaid. I love making them this way because it means her arms are worked directly onto the body so they will stay strong after many years of hugs and tugs.

The tail is done with a big hole in it so you can insert a small section of exposed bone. Her tail is also full of holes.

Oh, and she’s missing an arm. She can’t really hug back, but she loves getting a good snuggle.

This pattern is also available as a Premium Pattern! Premium Patterns are ad-free, printable .pdf files, professionally formatted and edited, with extra tutorial photos not available in the free version, and print-only perks, like checkboxes for every round*!

Premium Patterns are available in the Hooked by Kati Shop, Ravelry, and Etsy.

Zombie Mermaid Pattern

Pattern is written in English, with US terms, using Craft Yarn Council abbreviations.

Intermediate.  Pattern uses chains (ch), slip stitch (sl st), single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), double crochet (dc), right side (RS), wrong side (WS), back loops only (BLO), increases, and decreases. Experience assembling amigurumi is recommended.

Supplies

  • Red Heart Super Saver yarn, 100% acrylic, worsted weight, 364 yds/7 oz/198 g, < 1 ball each of Oatmeal (OAT), Light Sage (SAGE), Black (BLK), Cherry Red (RED), Soft White (WHT), Baby pink (PNK)
  • G (4.00 mm) Furls hook
  • Polyfil stuffing
  • 2- 15mm painted round-pupil safety eyes Note: Two different sized eyes may be used to create a more kooky zombie look
  • Straight pins
  • Stitch markers (optional)
  • Tapestry Needle

Size

15 inches, from top of brains to tip of tail

Gauge

8 sts x 8 rows in sc = 2” x 2”

Pattern Notes

  • Safety eyes are inserted after neck is narrowed; this is more difficult, but necessary because they must be centered on the body, and the arm holes need to be made before you can identify the front of the body.

Pattern Stitches

  • Single Crochet Join (sc join): With slip knot on hook, insert hook into stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through both loops on hook. Counts as a single crochet.
  • Slip Stitch Join (sl st join): With slip knot on hook, insert hook into stitch, pull up a loop, pull loop through loop on hook.
  • Surface Single Crochet (Surface sc): Insert hook into work, around post or space between stitches, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through both loops on hook.
  • Surface Slip Stitch (Surface sl st): insert hook into work, around post or space between stitches, pull up a loop, pull through loop on hook.
  • Fringe threading: Fold strand of yarn in half, insert hook into desired st in work, wrap loop of yarn over hook, pull through st, wrap both strands over hook, pull through loop on hook, pull tight.
