Becoming Scarf | Free Crochet Pattern by Guest Designer Marie Sergares/Underground Crafter

This gender-neutral scarf uses a simple faux ripple pattern and stripes of various widths for a dramatic look. This easy crochet scarf pattern is a great stash-busting pattern.

I’m Marie from Underground Crafter, and I’m so excited to be visiting you and Kati today! I’ve been crocheting for over 35 years, but as they say, time flies when you’re having fun! One of my favorite things about fall is making gifts for friends and loved ones. The Becoming Scarf makes a great gift for any teen or adult on your handmade holiday list.

The best part is that the pattern is simple and easy to remember, so if you’re a beginner, you can take it on successfully, and if you’re a crochet pro, you can watch your favorite show while banging out a few of these.

I was inspired to name this the Becoming Scarf because it’s made with recycled yarn. I love the idea of transformation, and so I thought of this scarf as something that becomes a comforting hug after being thrown in the trash. You can use any bulky weight yarn as a substitute if you don’t have the same yarn on hand.

BECOMING SCARF

All patterns are written in English, in US terms using Craft Yarn Council abbreviations.

Difficulty: Easy pattern.  You need to have knowledge of single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), and skipping stitches (sk)

• CA – Color A
• CB – Color B
• ch – chain
• dc – double crochet
• rep – repeat
• sc – single crochet
• sk – skip
• st(s) – stitch(es)
• yo – yarn over
• *Repeat instructions after asterisk as indicated.
• () Repeat instructions between parentheses into same stitch.

Gauge

12 sts = 4” (10 cm) across in pattern. Gauge is not important for this pattern.

Measurements

7 inches wide x 64 inches long.

Supplies

• Wool and the Gang New Wave yarn, 53% cotton/47% recycled polyester, bulky weight, 150 yd/3.5 oz/100 g, Oyster Shell (CA), 2 balls and Mellow Mauve (CB), 2 balls
• Furls Odyssey K (6.5 mm) hook
• Tapestry needle

Pattern Notes

• This pattern is crocheted flat in rows along the long edge.
• Tips for working with long foundation chains, like the one used to start this project, are available here.
• Colors are changed in the last yo of the final stitch of designated rows. A helpful video tutorial for this method from New Stitch A Day is available here.
• Ch 1 at the beginning of Rows does not count as a stitch.

With CA, ch 201 (see Pattern Notes).

Row 1: 2 dc in third ch from hook, *sk 2 ch, (sc, 2 dc) in next ch; rep from * across to last 3 ch, sk 2 ch, sc in last ch. (200)

Row 2: Turn, ch 1, (sc, 2 dc) in first st, *sk 2 sts, (sc, 2 dc) in next st; rep from * across to last 3 sts, skip 2 sts, sc in last st.

Rows 3-6: Rep Row 2, 4 times, changing to CB in last yo of final sc in Row 6. Fasten off CA.

Rows 7-8: Rep Row 2 twice, changing to CA in last yo of final sc in Row 8. Fasten off CB.

Rows 9-10: Rep Row 2 twice, changing to CB in last yo of final sc in Row 6. Fasten off CA.

Row 11: Rep Row 2 once, changing to CA in last yo of final sc in Row 6. Fasten off CB.

Row 12: Rep Row 2 once, changing to CB in last yo of final sc in Row 6. Fasten off CA.

Rows 13-18: Rep Row 2, 6 times. Fasten off CB.

With a yarn needle, weave in the ends.
