The Sand Dollar Crochet Coasters were first published in Happily Hooked Magazine in 2018.

It took a lot of trial and error and many ugly sand dollars to finally arrive at these. The sand dollars on the beach in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico were so awesome and inspiring, I knew I had to make one. And not just one, enough of them to decorate my patio table in the summer months.

I love that nautical things are so popular right now, because there is really nothing quite as inspiring as the beach. I adore the sound of the waves, the smell of the air — it’s all so full of texture and color and rolling white noise.

*Sigh* I’m more relaxed just thinking about it.

So why not make yourself some coasters that take you to that place? Along with a glass of lemonade (or a margarita?) on a hot day, perhaps?

I had to get really creative with stitches to make the sand dollars come out just right. The textured “petals” are done with front-post dc clusters, followed by a round of treble crochets and a crab stitch border to give it a distinct, finished edge.

It may seem intimidating, but with the video tutorial, this pattern can be a one-stop-shop to learn lots of new stitches to add to your crochet tool belt.

This pattern can also be purchased as a Premium Pattern (printable, ad-free, downloadable .pdf file) here.  It can also be found on Etsy or Ravelry.

  1. Trying to make this pattern for a car cupholder for my granddaughter. I used a smaller needle, thinner yard, and double crochet instead of treble at the end. It still may be a bit too large. Any other ideas? Thanks for any help you can provide. Really like the pattern!

  2. Hi Kati, i am having a go at your sand dollar coasters. I love the pattern. But i struggle with the count. I have the 25 stitches at the end of round 3. But in the next round i can’t seem to find room for the 7 posts in between the holes. At least not the way the pattern tells me to. The only way i can manage to get the 7 tr in, is by doing 2 tr’s in every stitch. But that is not what the pattern tells me to do. Can you give me a hint as to what i’m missing here?
    Thx!
    Sincerely, Jolanda
