By a popular vote on the ongoing Amigurumi Poll, Boris the Frog needed to be next on the docket. I have been flirting with the idea of a chubby frog with his mouth open for some time. I messed around with a few samples a while back. In the end, this guy turned out great.

There are a few frog heads in my TOAD drawer. (For those who don’t know, TOAD stands for Trashed Object Abandoned in Disgust.)  Boris the Frog is the culmination of a lot of tests.

This guy has a lot of great elements. His body is all in one piece, even with his mouth open. The inside of the mouth is also one piece, worked into the hole in the body for his face.

My favorite part of Boris the Frog’s construction is his eyes. The eyeballs are free-floating in his eyelids, so you can turn them any where you want him to look. I LOVE this feature. I’ve already had a lot of fun with it. (He’s particularly adorable with derpy crossed eyes.)

  1. I don’t understand the last row of the eyelid (chain 5,7 sc). Can you better explain what the chain is attaching to and where the sc’s are being crocheted? Is it attached to the 5th stitch and left loose?

    1. I corrected it to read more clearly. Chain 5, skip 5, sc 7. That will leave a ch-5 space. Then you attach the whole last round (including the chains) to the head and insert the eye through the chain-5 space. Hope that is clearer. 🙂

  2. I’m finishing up with the frog but having trouble putting the eye in the lid. Could you send me more specific instructions. Would really appreciate it.

    1. You have to just kind of squeeze it in there. Know that you are probably going to stretch and wiggle the lid around getting in there, and then straighten it after the fact. I like to use a smaller crochet hook (use the NO HOOKED end), poke it into the eyeball, and then put it in the eyelid and move it the way I want it to point before I take out the small hook. It gives it a sort of “handle” to use. 🙂

  3. I love your ideas but although I understand why you have ads on site it does slow down the loading of the actual content considerably I have been waiting for several minutes now and it still hasn’t completely loaded – it’s a shame – in most cases I just wouldn’t wait. Even the comments box is very slow.

    1. I did a little research, and it sounds like this might be a problem with your browser. I would recommend making sure you have an updated version, and try using Chrome or Firefox. Speed reductions like what you are seeing can be caused by too much traffic to a site, but that usually happens to big companies like Amazon on Black Friday, and only rarely to little blogs like mine.

      Hope that helps!

  4. Absolutely love this little frog and the eyes are pure genius I would like to use them on a plain green beanie for a child – hope this is ok with you!

    1. Go right ahead! On a hat the eyes might have a tendency to fall out, so I would consider adding a little string attached to the inside of the eye socket so that when/if they do, they don’t get lost. It would super odd for someone to find a stray eyeball on the playground. Lol!
